Chinese Style Flow Hive Project

In this video, I construct a "Flow Hive" style beehive that I ordered from China.

*** UPDATE *** As Scott Burnette pointed out down in the comments, the inner cover I screwed to the bottom of that hive above the bottom board actually goes under the roof. The entrance reducer does not need to screw on, you just open the little doors and stick them in the entrance which is much smaller if you remove the screened inner cover from under the brood box and put it under the roof where it belongs. I know it's been two years but hopefully, people watching the video know that the screen goes under the pitched roof, not between the bottom board and brood box.

I decided to use this hive because I am living in Korea for the time being. I am not certain that I could get a "Nuc" to activate this hive, and this is my first hive, so I felt I needed the practice to construct the hive.

This was certainly an interesting project. Most of my projects in the past few years have been sheet metal, for motorcycles and helicopters. This is the first time I have worked with wood since High School.

The Hive was ordered from Alibaba. Some of the issues I had were:

1. Import Fees. The fees were about one-third of the total cost of the project.

2. Missing Hardware. The kit included some hardware, but it was not the right type, as I talk about in the video, and not the right amount.

Overall, I feel this was a good practice project. The wood can obviously be re-purposed for other projects. The frames are iffy, but would probably function in a pinch.

My wife, Hydee, and I plan to have at least ten hives to help improve our gardens and vineyard in the Philippines. We are still researching proper apiary procedures, but this was the first step in starting our plans.
