Bayonne is divided into two parts by the river Adur, where on one side is Petit Bayona, the new part of the city; and the Great Bayonne, the old part and where the old town is located. In the historical heart of the city, the Cathedral of Santa María stands out and its bell towers are the main building to be seen in Bayonne, which are also visible from practically anywhere in the city.

Hidden in the star streets of the historic center, this Gothic-style cathedral is an emblem of Bayonne. Its construction began in the thirteenth century, but was not completed until the seventeenth century and has now been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, as a monument to the Camino de Santiago in France. Next to the cathedral is the splendid 13th century cloister, one of the largest in France.
