Amazing new shark fossils found in mammoth cave.

“Nature has a habit of placing some of her most attractive treasures in places where it is difficult to locate and obtain them.” ― Charles Doolittle Walcott

On this #NationalFossilDay, Mammoth Cave National Park is excited to announce a team of paleontologists, cave specialists, and park rangers have discovered a trove of fossil treasures inside Mammoth Cave that has yielded one of the most diverse Mississippian shark fauna in North America!

Fossils representing at least 40 different species of sharks and their relatives have been found, including remains of fossil specimens which appear to belong to several new species of sharks. In addition, the team has identified two instances of rare preservation of three-dimensional skeletal cartilage which has now been documented using photogrammetric images to create 3-D models of the specimens.

Discover more information on the team’s amazing discoveries, view the 3-D models of the rare skeletal cartilage, and see details about paleoartist Julius Csotonyi’s brand-new painting that depicts some of the Mississippian shark and invertebrate fauna from Mammoth Cave on the NPS Paleontology Website:
