The 1912 Novella That Inspired the Necronomicon

In 1912, an English writer published a novella about a scientist who discovers an ancient set of stone tablets revealing the true purpose of human existence. The revelation kills him. He never tells you what was on the tablets. That novella was The Man Who Found Out, by Algernon Blackwood. It became the direct ancestor of H.P. Lovecraft's Necronomicon, the most famous fictional cursed book in English. Today the Necronomicon is the cursed book at the heart of the Evil Dead franchise and Marvel's Darkhold, and Blackwood's question of whether some discoveries are better not made anchors the modern AI safety debate.
