Most People Don’t Know Electricity Can Do This

Lichtenberg scars, also called lightning flowers, are rare, branching skin patterns that can appear on a person after being struck by lightning or exposed to extremely high electrical energy. They look like tree- or fern-shaped marks spreading across the skin, which is why they’re often mistaken for tattoos or burn scars.

What makes Lichtenberg scars unique is that they aren’t traditional burns. Instead, they’re caused by electrical energy briefly affecting blood vessels near the skin’s surface, creating these striking patterns. In many cases, they fade on their own over time, sometimes disappearing completely within days or weeks.

These patterns are named after Georg Christoph Lichtenberg, a scientist who studied electrical discharges in the 18th century. Today, they’re considered one of the most fascinating and rare effects of lightning on the human body—more like a natural electrical imprint than a permanent scar.
