he Ajanta caves, located about 450 km from the country's financial capital Mumbai, have been carved out of huge mountains and rocks. They are shaped like a horseshoe. These caves are located near the Waghora river near Aurangabad in the Sahyadri mountain range. A village named Ajantha is located at some distance from here and the Ajanta caves were named after it. There are a total of 29 caves in it. Various events related to Lord Buddha have been depicted beautifully on the walls and ceilings here. There are two types of caves here. These caves have been named Vihar and Chaitya Griha. The number of Vihars in these caves is said to be 25 and the number of Chaitya Grihas is said to be four. Historians say that while the Buddhists used Vihars for living, Chaitya Grihas were used as a place of meditation. Stupas have been built at the end of these caves, which are a symbol of Lord Buddha.

देश की आर्थिक राजधानी मुंबई से करीब 450 किलोमीटर दूर अजंता की गुफाओं को बड़े-बड़े पहाड़ों और चट्टानों को काटकर तैयार किया गया है, जो आकार में एक घोड़े की नाल की तरह है, यह गुफाएं सह्याद्री पर्वतमाला में बनी औरंगाबाद के पास वघोरा नदी के पास स्थित हैं| यहीं से कुछ दूरी पर अजिंठा नाम का एक गांव बसा है और इसी के आधार पर अजंता की गुफाओं का नामकरण हुआ, इसमें कुल 29 गुफाएं हैं| यहाँ की दीवारों और छतों पर भगवान बुद्ध से जुड़ी विभिन्न घटनाओं को बखूबी दिखाया गया है, यहाँ दो तरह की गुफाएं हैं| इन गुफाओं को विहार और चैत्य गृह का नाम दिया गया है| इनमें विहार की संख्या 25 और चैत्यगृहों की संख्या चार बताई गई है| ऐसे में इतिहासकार बताते हैं कि एक ओर जहाँ विहार का इस्तेमाल बौध्द रहने के लिए करते थे, तो वहीं चैत्यगृह का इस्तेमाल ध्यान स्थल के रूप में करते थे| इन गुफाओं के अंत में स्तूप बने हैं, जो भगवान बुद्ध का प्रतीक है|
