L’Espresso’s ‘Abuse’ cover sparks backlash — and support

Italy’s L’Espresso has received strong support from readers after facing criticism from Israeli officials over its controversial “Abuse” cover linked to the occupied West Bank.

The image quickly gained traction online, with many social media users sharing the cover and backing the magazine’s reporting.

In response to claims that the image was misleading or fabricated, L’Espresso released behind-the-scenes footage showing the moment the photo was taken, aiming to demonstrate its authenticity.

Speaking to TRT World, Editor-in-Chief Emilio Carelli defended the publication’s editorial stance.

“Our goal has always been to do investigative journalism — independent journalism that tells the truth,” he said.

Carelli added that documenting what he describes as unlawful realities on the ground is part of the responsibility of serious journalism.

The episode has reignited broader debates over media credibility, visual verification, and how conflict narratives are shaped — and contested — in global media.
