Purity practice: find the phrase by losing your vibrato

I'm Nathan Cole from http://natesviolin.com.

Sometimes, in order to play an effective phrase, you have to get back to basics. The bow decides how loud and how soft the notes in a phrase sound, and those dynamics are the structure of the phrase.

So often, a constant vibrato distracts us from letting the right hand do its job: all our mental energy goes to the left hand, and the bow arm becomes boring.

So purity practice is all about losing your vibrato (temporarily, of course)! You'll rediscover what your bow arm is actually doing, and you'll be in a position to shape the phrase exactly the way you want. In the process, you'll improve your intonation through the natural resonance of the violin. Finally, you'll give your vibrato its proper sense of proportion once you add it back in.

Take a look with me at the first phrase of the Barber violin concerto while I demonstrate purity practice. And don't forget to pick up my free practice guide at http://natesviolin.com!
