Ewa Demarczyk - Deszcze
Krzysztof Kamil Baczyński
Deszcze
Deszcz jak siwe łodygi, szary szum,
a u okien smutek i konanie.
Taki deszcz kocham, taki szelest strun,
deszcz - życiu zmiłowanie.
Dalekie pociągi jeszcze jadą dalej
bez ciebie. Cóż? Bez ciebie. Cóż?
w ogrody wód, w jeziora żalu,
w liście, w aleje szklanych róż.
I czekasz jeszcze? Jeszcze czekasz?
Deszcz jest jak litość - wszystko zetrze:
i krew z bojowisk, i człowieka,
i skamieniałe z trwóg powietrze.
A ty u okien jeszcze marzysz,
nagrobku smutny. Czasu napis
spływa po mrocznej, głuchej twarzy,
może to deszczem, może łzami.
I to, że miłość, a nie taka,
i to, że nie dość cios bolesny,
a tylko ciemny jak krzyk ptaka,
i to, że płacz, a tak cielesny.
I to, że winy niepowrotne,
a jedna drugą coraz woła,
i to, jakbyś u wrót kościoła
widzenie miał jak sen samotne.
I stojąc tak w szeleście szklanym,
czuję, jak ląd odpływa w poszum.
Odejdą wszyscy ukochani,
po jednym wszyscy - krzyże niosąc,
a jeszcze innych deszcz oddali,
a jeszcze inni w mroku zginą,
staną za szkłem, co jak ze stali,
i nie doznani miną, miną.
I przejdą deszcze, zetną deszcze,
jak kosy ciche i bolesne,
i cień pokryje, cień omyje.
A tak kochając, walcząc, prosząc
stanę u źródeł - studni ciemnych,
w groźnym milczeniu ręce wznosząc,
jak pies pod pustym biczem głosu.
Nie pokochany, nie zabity,
nie napełniony, niedorzeczny,
poczuję deszcz czy płacz serdeczny,
że wszystko Bogu nadaremno.
Zostanę sam. Ja sam i ciemność.
I tylko krople, deszcze, deszcze
coraz to cichsze, bezbolesne.

The Rains (translated by Anna Zukowska-Wilocks and Richard Wilcocks)
Rain like grey stalks, ashen pouring,
at the windows agony and grief.
I love rain like this, a rustle of strings,
rain - the pity of life.
Faraway trains travel yet further
without you. What? Without you. What?
into gardens of water, into lakes of sorrow,
into leaves, into avenues of glass roses.
Are you still waiting? Waiting still?
Rain is like compassion - it will wipe out everything:
blood from the battlefield, a man,
the air petrified with fear.
And still you are dreaming at the windows,
a mournful tombstone. Time’s inscription
streams down its grim, deaf face
perhaps in rain, perhaps tears.
There, a love not really loving,
there, a blow not really painful,
but dark like the shriek of some bird,
there, the crying-out of flesh.
There, trespasses not coming back,
sometimes calling one to the other,
and there, as if at the great doors of a church,
you had a vision like a solitary dream.
Standing in the glassy rustling,
I feel the land drifting into the downpour.
All the beloved shall pass away,
first one, then all - bearing crosses,
yet others removed by the rain,
yet others vanished in the gloom,
they shall stand on the other side of the glass, as
if made of steel,
and unseasoned, they shall pass by, pass by.
And the rains shall cease, shall slice
like scythes silent and painful,
and a shadow shall envelop, a shadow shall
cleanse.
And loving, fighting, pleading like this
I shall stand at the source - the dark wells,
lifting my arms in a menacing silence,
like a dog under an empty voice ‘s lash.
Unloved, unslain,
unfulfilled, signifying nothing,
I feel the rain or a cry from the heart,
everything to God in vain.
I shall be alone. Alone with darkness.
Only the teardrops, the rains, the rains
quieter and quieter, painless.
