Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy ( ESWT ) - Georgina Tay, Singapore Podiatrist
Shockwave therapy or ESWT is a clinical treatment used to treat a variety of musculoskeletal problems. Originally designed to break down kidney stones, the machine was redesigned for use on other aspects of the body.
There are three different shockwave machines available at East Coast Podiatry Centre; radial shockwave, focal shockwave and diabetic specific.
The wave length of each machine is specific to the need of the patient and specific to the condition at hand. ESWT is especially successful at treating tendinopathies, arthritic and chronic pains. The mechanism of action is to microscopically cause interstitial and extracellular biological responses, tissue regeneration, neovascularisation and hyper-stimulation analgesia for pain relief. The mechanism of how Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy works is more complex than the generally assumed mechanical and disintegrative effect.
Shockwave treatment is a valuable healing tool that is non invasive, can give immediate pain relief or reduction, it is fast with little to no down time and most side effects of the treatment are temporary and resolve with rest. A typical session of shockwave may last 10-30 minutes depending on the severity of the condition and the pain moderation during treatment.
