HISTORY OF THE PORT CABLE CAR DOME
SILVER, on Isabel de Torres Hill

The dome that we know as the base where today it raises the statue of Christ the Redeemer on the Isabel de Torres hill, it is actually a fortress, or rather it was built for that purpose: an anti-aircraft fortress for some and a 'pill box' for others. built by Trujillo to protect the city from possible incursions foreigners.

The loopholes were equipped with anti-aircraft artillery from the different flanks. On the surface where the statue of Christ stands today, there was a gate hexagonal through which, from the inside, a cannon or any weapon capable of counteracting attacks of different types, maritime, air or land; In addition, due to the panoramic view it dominated, it was perfect for monitoring the entire coastline.

Strategically, the fortress was covered with grass so that, due to its dome shape, it could be confused with a hill. But ineffective result. Given the circumstances of the climate prevailing in that environment, the degree of continuous cloudiness, did not allow visibility and the constant vigilance.

In 1970, at the top of Loma Isabel de Torres
The Christ the Redeemer was installed to highlight the tourist attraction of the mountain. The architect Christian Martinez was the one who had the idea of installing a cable car to ascend to the top of the hill and allow
easy access for tourists.

So in June 1971, the road from El Cupey to the top of the mountain from the city's military fortress was started. The intention was to facilitate and help mobilize the machines or equipment for the construction of the cable car.

In the year 1972 the then president Dr. Balaguer gives the order to begin construction work on the Puerto Plata cable car. A year later, the Italian company Cerretti Tafani begins the installation of this, finishing the work
in 1974.

In the year 1973 the Engineer Benjamin Palewonsjy was commissioned to convert the entire area of the top in a botanical garden

At the end of 1974 all the cable car equipment
they were already installed. After six months of
test on July 19, 1975 the work was opened to the public.

The Isabel de Torres National Park takes its name from the popular Isabel de Torres hill, a promontory of about 800 m that crowns the city of Puerto Plata.

This park, about 15 km2, is of magnificent natural beauty, which makes it one of the most visited parks in the Dominican Republic. The most attractive, without a doubt, is the hill that crowns it, the Isabel de Torres hill, and the impressive statue of Christ the Redeemer that welcomes visitors with open arms.

To go up here, the only way to do it is by means of the cable car that operates from Puerto Plata. On its way, it offers beautiful views of the city and its coast. Once up, you can also take a leisurely walk through its botanical gardens and learn about the biodiversity of its nature. This natural reserve has a multitude of animal and plant species, many of them endemic to the place. Some birds stand out among them, such as the palm cigua, the woodpecker or the guaraguao.

The Isabel de Torres National Park is offered to the visitor as a place for both adventure and relaxation, if what is sought is a place away from the large crowds of tourists and enjoy the purest nature.
