When the US left Taiwan for China

In January 1979, the United States of America — once a fierce backer of the Republic of China — normalized relations with the People’s Republic of China. Nixon might have been the one to take that first step towards normalization by going to China and shaking hands with Mao Zedong. But the obstacles between that and full normalization of foreign relations were mighty. Not all of those obstacles were resolved during those negotiations and we continue to live in the world shaped by the consequences.
