Hadrian's Wall Infections #hadrianswall #ancientrome #romanempire #shorts

Sediment from Vindolanda, a fort along Hadrian’s Wall, shows soldiers were infected with roundworm, whipworm, and Giardia—signs of poor sanitation on the frontier.

It includes the first evidence of Giardia in Roman Britain, pointing to contaminated food, water, or hands.

About 28% of latrine‑drain samples contained worm eggs, and one tested positive for Giardia proteins using ELISA.

An older fort layer from the early Hadrian’s Wall period also revealed roundworm and whipworm, showing the problem spanned generations.

These parasites likely caused diarrhea, malnutrition, dehydration, and weakened readiness among troops defending the Wall.

Similar parasite patterns appear at other Roman military sites, despite latrines and sewers failing to prevent infection.

The findings underscore the harsh, unhygienic realities soldiers faced while guarding Hadrian’s Wall.
