Ice Rescue Technician Training - Self Study Video - Petawawa Fire Dept.

Taken from Part 5 (Rescue Scenarios) of the Ice Rescue Technician Training Self Study Video. This self-study course is a general introduction to the basic concepts of awareness for first responders to incidents involving ice water.

Like other departments, Petawawa's firefighters have found themselves specializing in various types of rescue operations beyond extinguishing a fire to save life and property. Along with crash extracations and water rescue, the department is becoming more versatile.

Donning yellow immersion suits, the trainees took turns rescuing simulated drowning victims using inflatable watercraft specially designed for this type of operation. Over the last couple of years, the department has qualified 17 members in this specialized rescue.

The department has aggressively branched out in water rescue thanks, in part, to the purchase of a new Rapid Deployment Craft (RDC), an inflatable boat that can manned by two persons and reeled back into shore once the casualty has been plucked from the water.
