Restoration of French Cavalry Broadsword Cavalry Advance.Hi! Today is my unique and great restoration. Something like this has never been done before. A restoration of a French cuirassier cavalry sword. This item is a very interesting model, a rare model, because this version was modernized, and it was a favorite weapon of the cavalry.
The item was found in France, purchased, and its condition is average. There is a lot of rust, the scabbard is missing, as well as some parts and the handle. But the blade and the guard are present. That is enough for me. And now I will bring everything to a perfect condition.

First of all, I started by disassembling the item itself. For this, I first removed surface rust with a soft brush, detached the guard, and only then moved on to cleaning the blade. For this I used a gentle method, the same one I am researching, studying, and sharing with you. You will not find anything like this anywhere else. I used natural materials and time. And it worked in my favor.
For the first day and a half, the blade stayed in this mixture. After that, I cleaned it with a cloth and thoroughly coated it with kerosene and left it for another one and a half days. Only after that did I move on to sanding with 1000, 1200, and 1500 grit sandpaper. After the blade was fully cleaned, I oiled it and moved on to the next step. The guard and handle area was also cleaned using natural methods, through a special mixture I used, and the effect was immediate.
The guard was placed in a container with kefir, a little vinegar, and citric acid. I am showing everything on the screen. After that, the guard was so perfectly cleaned that it did not even require any additional mechanical processing. I simply rinsed it with water and cleaning agents.

The next step is the handle. Here, of course, a lot of attention was required, because this handle must have specific dimensions in order to fit into the upper and lower parts of the guard. I made two identical scales, cut the required slot for the tang, glued them with wood glue, and then began shaping and fitting the handle for the cuirassier broadsword.
After the handle was ready, fitted, and all measurements were taken into account, I moved on to wrapping. Traditionally, as it was done 200 years ago, I used a thin cord about 1.5 mm thick, wrapped it and glued it, and then wrapped it with natural leather, creating special grooves for further wrapping with brass wire.
But before that, I decided to make the scabbard so the handle could dry properly. I made the scabbard from dry wood, glued it, and carved the shape I needed. Then I wrapped it with brass wire, securing it with wooden pins at the bottom and top, which later were hidden in the slots of the brass guard. I re-peened the handle and moved on to finishing the scabbard. When the scabbard was fully finished, I proceeded to make the fittings.

I made the fittings from 0.8 mm brass and chose exactly the parameters and details that existed 200 years ago. After the fittings were soldered using copper and silver solder, I moved on to finishing them, fitting them, and giving them a proper presentable appearance. After that, I mounted the fittings on the scabbard and covered it with natural leather. After trimming the excess, I coated the leather with wax, and painted the joints with paint.
