Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky revealed plans to swell the ranks of his army with foreign volunteers on Friday—following reports the country is running out of men to draft into the army for the ongoing conflict with Russia.
"I am grateful to all volunteers from other countries who are fighting for our freedom in Ukraine, understanding that this concerns the freedom of many other nations," he said. "Here in Ukraine, we must protect the right of our people to live freely... I have ordered to open significantly more opportunities to recruit foreign volunteers into the Ukrainian army."
Zelensky also announced an increase in payments for soldiers—with higher levels for more combat missions.
According to media reports, Ukraine is facing a severe conscription crisis, with many young men having fled the country despite martial law banning anyone aged 18-60 from leaving. The government admitted that two million have dodged the draft, and hundreds of thousands more are AWOL. The draft begins at age 25—with Kyiv resisting calls for it to be lowered—leaving the average age of a Ukrainian soldier in the mid-40s.
