Brain | Tumor | Research | Michael Berens | TEDxArrowheadRanch

Michael Berens takes us along on a visit to the brain, its structure & composition, and what happens when brain cells turn malignant. What are better ways to control brain tumors? By acting today, how can affected individuals and their families help change tomorrow for future victims of this disease?

Michael Berens serves as Professor in the Brain Tumor Research Unit, Director of the Cancer & Cell Biology Division of the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen) in Phoenix, AZ. He also serves as Deputy Director for TGen Research Resources. The research focus in Berens' lab is how cancer spreads, specifically studying the biochemical and genomic drivers of disseminating malignant brain cancer. Specific projects include accelerating drug discovery and development for glioblastoma (a lethal form of brain cancer), use of genomic profiling for treatment planning in cancer patients (Precision Medicine), and biomarkers of tumor response to therapy. Their goal is to identify or develop therapies that specifically target the invading malignant cells, leading to a major improvement in survival and quality of life for patients with glioblastoma. Dr. Berens holds 4 patents and has launched two biotech companies.
