Stalactite

Stalactites are calcium carbonate speleothems- cave formations, and they are musical. Stalactites sound like a bell or chime when struck with a mallet. A soft rubber mallet is best, producing a most resonant and ethereal sound, and doesn't damage or harm the stalactite.

Every stalactite has a unique note- like snowflakes no two look alike, or sound alike.

Stalactite, from the symphonic cycle Earth Music, uses recorded sounds of stalactites from several caves, sampled and performed into the composition, accompanied by synthesized strings and acoustic guitar. Caves featured are Blanchard Springs Caverns, Arkansas; Carlsbad Caverns, New Mexico; Caverns of Sonora, Texas; Cave of the Winds, Colorado; Lecheguilla Cave, New Mexico, and Luray Caverns, Virginia.

The stalactites recorded and sampled in this work exist in the Manitou Grand Caverns section of Cave of the Winds, Manitou Springs, Colorado, and were chosen for their tone purity and resonance.
