Arcana Heart 3 is the third entry of Team Arcana's (née Examu's) long-running all-girl fighting game series, originally released in Japanese arcades around 2009, with console releases (i.e. the PS3 and Xbox 360) around 2011 (with North America and Europe also receiving official English releases).

The game would receive multiple revisions - Arcana Heart 3 LOVE MAX!!!!! (originally released around May 2014 for arcades, with official English (console) releases coming out around late 2014) redesigned the game's UI, adds new game modes (for example, an After Story mode canonically taking place after the events of the game), and balance changes. Arcana Heart 3 LOVEMAX SIXSTARS!!!!!! (released around December 2014 in arcades and December 2017 for PC (via Steam)) also adds one new playable character and Arcana (new final boss Minori Amanohara and Ichor (which I'll get into later)) and more balance changes. LOVEMAX SIXSTARS!!!!!! in particular was partially Kickstarter-funded, with the game reaching its target funds, in addition to other stretch goals (which are comprised of new characters and further balance changes).

These stretch goals would only be further realized with Arcana Heart 3 LOVEMAX SIXSTARS!!!!!! XTEND, releasing worldwide to PC as a free update to base LOVEMAX SIXSTARS!!!!!! on April 2021. This version adds more new characters (Series Pistrix No. 29 and Dark Heart) and one new playable arcana (Parace L'sia, who in previous games was a boss character) as paid DLC, with new stages, full widescreen support (as previously the game was displayed as 4:3 with borders), and the usual slew of balance changes coming for free. An arcade version of the game (for the eXa-Arcadia service) is also planned for release, including new content that are previously unmet stretch goals (Dark Heart's Arcana (Love Prison Geist), a new "World Extinction" story mode, and a new (originally CPU-only, it is unclear if she will be made playable) character (Omega) related to the new story mode).

This game has 3 standard attack buttons of varying strengths (A, B, and C), a unique homing button (D), and an additional attack button associated with your Arcana (E). Unique to the Arcana Heart series is the homing system, done by pressing the aforementioned homing button. It allows you to dash toward your opponent and fly toward your opponent in the air, and your homing trajectory can also be altered by pressing a direction during homing in the air. You can also temporarily speed up your homing by pressing the homing button again, and also keep that momentum by attacking almost exactly after pressing the button, resulting in your character flying very fast (which is known in this game's community as the "Homing Boost").

For a single bar of meter ("Arcana Gauge"), you can also use the homing button for what is known as "homing cancel" - this game's move-canceling technique that allows you to cancel most attacks into homing, then allowing you to attack again, continuing the combo. Other uses of meter in this game include super attacks (both regular supers that use one bar, as well as Critical Heart attacks that use three) and guard cancels, of which there are two types.

Forward guard cancels (during blockstun, 6D) has you do a forward homing dash which allows you to cancel it to a special attack and also generates a shield-like effect during the dash. Attacks from the opponent during this state results in a clash. Meanwhile, back guard cancels (during blockstun, 4D) has you leap back a short distance (with invincibility frames) before homing towards your opponent, allowing you to whiff punish your opponent should they throw out a move with high recovery when you take a leap back.

How meter works in this game is somewhat interesting. You start with one bar (with a maximum of three), and when you use up meter, your maximum usable meter (indicated by green bars) is decreased and made temporarily unusable (red bars). During that state, you cannot increase your maximum usable meter, and only after a set period of time (or by building meter from attacking and/or blocking) does your usable meter increase. All unusable meter are also refilled between rounds.

In addition to characters, you can also select an Arcana, which is where the Arcana button comes to play. They are normally heavy (and chargeable) attacks that send your opponent sideways or to the air on hit, but they are also used for additional special moves (all specific to your chosen Arcana). For example, this video uses Partinias - Heart Aino's canon Arcana, although you can use other Arcanas without affecting the story - who could shoot out projectiles (Roz Tóxo (623E), for example, fires out a laser that goes fullscreen).
