GWR Class 143 'Pacer' Review & Farewell - As bad as they say? (Exmouth to Paignton)
Hello, and welcome back to another video! For this train trip report, I am taking a journey on-board an infamous Class 143 'Pacer' train. This train is notorious for its rough ride, and poor comfort, but how are they actually like to ride?
These two car diesel units are capable of 75mph (120km/h), despite being built from bus parts, the most noticeable similarity being the doors. Ignoring these common complaints, I never really had an issue with these trains, which I used very frequently. However, they are now all sadly withdrawn from GWR, being replaced mostly by the not very nice Class 150 units.
Today's route starts at Exmouth, where we travel along the Exe estuary, passing through Lympstone on the way to Exeter. This is an interesting place, as it features the Lympstone Commando station, which until recently was only accessible to people visiting the nearby Royal Marines Training Centre. After Polsloe Bridge station, the train joins the line to London Waterloo, and then shortly after arrives into Exeter Central, the centrally located station of Exeter, but not its main one.
That accolade belongs to Exeter St Davids, which we soon arrive into after a two minute ride down the hill. At this point, the train reverses towards the infamous Dawlish seawall, which has some heavy maintenance works ongoing at present. It's not long before the train arrives into Paignton, on its very circuituous journey.
Sadly, these trains are withdrawn now, but at least you can relive the experience in my video.
