Although throughout the majority of the recording process Ezra and company kept the details surrounding their new album under wraps. He did, however, reveal a working title for the record in early 2017 - Mitsubishi Macchiato. At this point in the recording process the record could have actually been not one, but two 23 song albums according to Koenig. Although some tracks didn’t make it on the final cut of the record that we have today it is clear the inspiration the band drew for Father Of The Bride is unlike any other Vampire Weekend album to date. When asked about his influences for the project, Koenig cited two unlikely sources. One being Kanye West, who inspired him to work with a wider variety of musicians on the album, and the other, Country Pop star, Kacey Musgraves, who Ezra has revealed heavily influenced his approach songwriting on Father of the Bride.
It’s become the song of the summer for most Vampire Weekend fans, but the charismatic lead single, Harmony Hall, has way darker undertones than most fans realize on first listen. When you break down the lyrics of the song itself it becomes clear that Ezra is singing about the growing turmoil in the American social-political climate. Harmony Hall specifically seems to address the resurgence of hate groups within high-class American universities, such as the Ivy League schools that Vampire Weekend once attended. Lyrics like “Anger wants a voice, voices wanna sing” can be interpreted as the reactionary anger of those hate groups in the United States, the following “Singers harmonize 'til they can't hear anything” may also be a reflection on the act of surrounding yourself with people who agree with your ideas until one forms the likes of an echo chamber.
Throughout the band’s discography, Vampire Weekend has never been one to shy away from the use of samples in their music, and Father of the Bride, certainly is no acceptation to that. The new record features more prominent sampling than any other album in their discography thus far. The most notable use on the album lands on the opening track “Hold You Know” where a Melanesian Choir from Hans Zimmer’s “The Thing Red Line” soundtrack is featured as the centerpiece of the song. Other notable uses of sampling include S.E. Rogie’s “Please Go Easy with Me” on Rich Man, and legendary Japanese musician Haruomi Hosono’s “Talking” on 2021.
