Zero Budget Light Modifiers for Video

Stay tuned to the end for a chance to win a prize!

In past episodes of the show, we’ve talked about how you can achieve professional light setups using lower budget lighting tools. However, in these lower budget lighting setups we’ve still used industry standard light modifiers -- that can be difficult or expensive to get your hands on. So, this week on 4 Minute Film School, we’re showing you a couple different low budget alternatives to the industry standard tools, and how you can still get very similar results without breaking the bank...

In this video, Matt from the A-Team will walk you through a standard book light setup and then replace each element with a low budget alternative. He’ll discuss DIY lighting methods, things you can build out of parts from a hardware store, and what materials make for the best light modifiers. Then he’ll compare each one to its industry standard equivalent, showing just how close you can get with cheaper tools!

The main aspects addressed in this video are bouncing light, diffusing light, and using negative fill. Bouncing light tends to require materials that are white and solid, to maximize the light reflecting off of them. Diffusing light requires materials that are semi transparent. The level of transparency will affect how diffused the light is. Negative fill requires materials that are black and don’t reflect light as much as. Think soft, thick materials, rather than light and shiny.

Really anything can be used to modify light. There are probably a handful of objects in your own home that you could use for a shoot right now. Oftentimes, with the tools they use in Hollywood, you pay for the ease of use. Knowing how to make your everyday objects into filmmaking equipment takes a little creativity, but once you do you’ll be able to get great lighting without sacrificing your entire budget.
