Atget: The Father of Modern Photography

Eugene Atget was a French photographer who would radically change the relationship we have with photographs. Before him photographers tried to align themselves with the principles of painting and pictorialism. Atget flipped these conventions on their heads when he decided to clearly document what was in front of his camera. He did not rely on parlor tricks or gimmicks to show how beautifully mysterious the world is.

Atget would emphasize the photographic picture before anyone else quite understood what that meant. Through his process of documentation he would become the foundation of "straight photography" - a no nonsense approach to dealing with the facts present within a frame removing as much of the photographer's own perceptions or ideas as possible. He possessed a genius level of photographic intuition and control of form.

Atget is someone who isn't as popular as I believe he should be. His process became a model for many other greats. As the saying goes we see further by standing on the shoulder of giants, Atget is that giant.
