In the summer time, if your windows are in full sun, the heat from outside will be making your home uncomfortably hot and costing you a fortune as your air conditioner works hard to keep the place cool.

The amount of heat coming in can be as much as a thousand watts per square metre, so a window of two square metres is about equivalent to a blow-heater on full power.

To reduce the heat, external shading is a great place to start, but sometimes it's not possible or practical to fit external shades, so in these cases, we have to think about treating the inside of the glass.

There are many solar control films available that stick permanently to your windows to reduce the heat from the summer sun. But consider this - come wintertime, you'll want to let that sun in through your glazing to take advantage of the natural warmth.

The best solutions for covering your windows are always those that you can fit and remove according to the time of year and the temperature outside.

Renshade is a reflective material that comes in long rolls. It can be applied to your windows in summer to reflect heat away from your home. Its silver surface is perforated, which means you can still see through it from a distance and it still lets in about 15% of the light.

It's an excellent solution for keeping your home cool, and a great alternative for people who are renting or for anyone not allowed to make major changes to their home.

It can be applied in a number of ways - you can install Renshade using the velcro dots provided and a pair of scissors, or, if you want it to look a little tidier and last longer, you can mount the Renshade on a flyscreen frame, so it can be held taught and fit the window perfectly.
