Doma was born unable to feel real emotions like love, grief, or empathy. In fact, he never truly felt anything in his entire life. He never understood what genuinely moved other people. As a child, he watched his mother kill his father and then herself right in front of him—and he sat there completely unmoved, only thinking that she messed up his room and now he needed to move to another place.
He believed he loved Shinobu, though he didn’t really understand love, while Shinobu hated him deeply. By the time he first felt something real toward her, it was too late—she was already gone.
Doma thought he was helping people by killing them, claiming he freed them from suffering, but he never realized how cruel this truly was. He considered humans weak, yet he was fascinated by their ability to love, cry, and fight—emotions he could never feel. For him, death wasn’t something to fear because he didn’t grasp the value of life.
Even in his final moments, alone in the void, he thought of Shinobu and felt something like pain for the first time—but there was no one to guide him. Obsessed with beauty, he saw beautiful people as decorations or food, not as living beings. He sincerely believed he was offering them salvation, yet he had never learned what true kindness really is.
