CNC Project: Making a Set of Knife Handles w/ Composite Cutting on the CNC

John Saunders from NYC CNC machines a set of Knife Handles from Canvas Micarta, a fiberglass laminate, using Amana Tool® composite cutting CNC router bits. http://www.toolstoday.com

Using the Tormach® 770, Autodesk® Fusion 360™ CAD/CAM and a special solid carbide grade end mill, John cuts into the dense Canvas Micarta which is made of thermo-setting resins combined with layers of canvas cloth pressed under high pressure and heat to form knife handles.

Amana Tool router bit no. 46099 is designed especially for cutting fiberglass, fiberglass PCB board, tile, Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) and other highly abrasive materials. It's diamond-pattern cutting edges have 'Up-Cut' and 'Down-Cut' angles to grind through the work and also works well on epoxies made with carbon, glass, composite materials and Phenolic.
