CELEBRATING HOLI (VARANASI, INDIA)

Holi - the festival of colors and love. The craziest festival in India!!! But is it safe to celebrate Holi in Varanasi?!
When we decided on India as our next destination Holi was one of the first dreams we wrote on our list. Quick research showed that the best place to celebrate would be Varanasi, so we just booked the flights and after 5 months in India it was time to really plan our Holi experience. We started reading online… Post after post warning women not to go out on the streets during Holi, especially not in Varanasi.
It wasn’t just one person, there were so many warnings we just couldn’t take the risk, even though we were here for a long time and never felt anything like what they were describing, we had no idea how things get during Holi, and so we decided to find a private party.
Lucky for us Moustache Hostel, one of the best hostels in Varanasi, was planning a private Holi party on the roof! With great Music, amazing people and A LOT of colors - this is how we celebrated Holi in Varanasi.

**After reading the warnings we decided to still go to Varanasi (as we already had our flights) and celebrate privately. Unfortunately a day before Holi we went to explore the city and had a horrible experience. A man who walked in front of us grabbed Rotem inappropriately in the most intimate area.
It had really shaken us and caused us to stay in the hostel rather than explore more of this beautiful city.
We feel that we had to mention it as it seems like around Holi in Varanasi things can get too crazy and some people allow themselves to do things that are just unexceptable. Saying that, we do not think India as a country is dangerous for women, we never had any kind of incidents like this in five months of traveling here. We also don’t think it’s all men, this is an individual that had no right to do what he did! Other men we met here are some of the most respectful we’ve ever met.
- We do recommend if you are a woman, especially if you are travelling alone, and you are going to be in Varanasi around Holi that you will be aware of this kind of behaviour and plan accordingly.
