COMMON TONES - Make Fingerstyle Guitar EASIER on Yourself

When you are learning to fingerpick the guitar, especially when Travis Picking, you need to focus a bit more on the transition between chords than you do when strumming with a pick. If you're not careful, some patterns can sound unmusical due to sudden gaps in sound when refretting for a new chord. Luckily, there is a great strategy that can help you avoid this pitfall. Often times, two chords will share one or more notes. These are called common tones. If you're able to fret a common tone with the same finger for two consecutive chords, you'll likely experience a smoother transition between the chords. I'm going to get you started with utilizing common tones by showing you an arrangement based on the intro to the song Julia, which Beatles member John Lennon wrote for his mom after learning the Travis Picking pattern from Donovan. The fingerpicking pattern is the same throughout the entire piece in this video. All three chords include the high G note on the 3rd fret of the 1st string. Keep it fretted with your pinky finger throughout the entire passage. Let me know if you can find more common tones in this song in the comments, and keep on pickin'!
