Quibi Video: Drew "Bundini" Brown, Coach of Boxing Greats
Created by CTV News, for the Quibi streaming platform, this short video explores the fascinating life of Drew "Bundini" Brown.
Bundini is most famous for his time as Muhammad Ali's cornerman, confidant, and "hype man," as well as coining one of the most famous phrases in sporting history - "float like a butterfly, sting like a bee."
Using rare archival footage, and narrated by Todd D. Snyder, the author of BUNDINI: DON'T BELIEVE THE HYPE, the only biography about Drew "Bundini" Brown written to date, the video brings the viewer through Bundini's rich life...
From being born into poverty in Sanford Florida, to joining the navy at the age of 13, to travelling the world as a merchant marine, to marrying a white orthodox Russian-Jewish woman from Brighton Beach in the 1950s, to spending time in the Harlem jazz club scene, to his boxing life (7 years with the great Sugar Ray Robinson before joining Muhammad Ali's camp), and starring in the two blaxploitation Shaft movies in the late 70s.
Bundini passed away at the age of 57, in 1987.
While in the hospital, on his death bed, Muhammad Ali spent time by his bedside, sharing tender moments going through their old routines that made the duo famous.
After Bundini's death, Muhammad Ali was travelling abroad and could not attend the funeral. Ali sent a postcard saying "YOU, made me the greatest."
