Mount Shasta via Avalanche Gulch 5/28/16

We were supposed to climb Olympus this weekend, but stormy weather altered our plans. We decided last minute to drive South to California and climb Mt Shasta. This would get us ready for our high elevation climbs planned later in the summer and the weather was 100% clear and sunny unlike WA! We climbed to Helen Lake at 10400ft on Friday and spent the rest of the day acclimating at camp. We headed up Avalanche Gulch from camp at 2:15am and reached the summit at 8:30am on Saturday. We took only one 15 minute break and though we felt effects of altitude, it wasn't half as bad as it had been on Rainier's summit last year. We were actually the first team to make the summit (14162ft). We then spent 2 hours napping at 13800ft to further acclimate and gave ourselves headaches. We then descended to 2800ft and napped for another hour waiting for the snow to get soft enough to glissade down. We returned to the holiday masses at camp with over 200 people planning to make the climb that night. We were glad to have avoid the holiday throngs! We spent another night at Helen Lake for more acclimatization and hiked out Sunday morning.
