Here’s an authentic Lahori Fish Fry recipe that’s crispy, spicy, and packed with flavor:

Ingredients:

1 kg fish (boneless fillets or steaks; rohu, sole, or basa work well)

2 cups gram flour (besan)

2 tbsp rice flour (for extra crispiness)

1 tbsp garlic paste

1 tbsp ginger paste

2 tbsp lemon juice

1 tsp turmeric powder

1 tsp red chili powder (adjust to taste)

1 tsp cumin powder

1 tsp coriander powder

1/2 tsp ajwain (carom seeds)

1/2 tsp black pepper powder

1/4 tsp garam masala

Salt to taste

Water (to make a thick batter)

Mustard oil or vegetable oil for frying
Instructions:

1. Prepare the Fish

Wash the fish thoroughly and pat dry.

Rub it with lemon juice and a pinch of salt, then set aside for 15 minutes.
2. Make the Marinade

In a bowl, mix garlic paste, ginger paste, turmeric, red chili powder, cumin powder, coriander powder, ajwain, black pepper, and garam masala.

Add salt and lemon juice to the mix.

Rub this marinade evenly over the fish and let it marinate for at least 1-2 hours (overnight is ideal for deeper flavor).
3. Prepare the Batter

In a separate bowl, combine gram flour, rice flour, a pinch of salt, and water to make a thick batter.

The batter should coat the back of a spoon without dripping off.
4. Coat the Fish

Dip each piece of marinated fish into the batter, ensuring it is evenly coated.
5. Fry the Fish

Heat mustard oil (or vegetable oil) in a deep frying pan over medium-high heat.

Fry the fish in batches until golden brown and crispy, about 4-5 minutes per side.

Avoid overcrowding the pan.
6. Drain and Serve

Remove the fish and place it on paper towels to absorb excess oil.

Serve hot with green chutney, naan, or as part of a platter.
