Il-2 Cliffs of Dover - No. 71 Squadron Chronicles - Episode 4

Today's episode is yet another multiplayer session with the 71st Virtual Squadron, but with a particular twist. It features 71st pilots Ratsy, Shello, Wuffman, Renzo, Rebel Squrl and your favorite Chuck.

Operation Sea Lion: With the french army literally destroyed during the Battle of France, Germany is now heading to the doorstep of the British Isles. The 71st is sent out of RAF Eastchurch to lead the defence of the British front lines near Dover harbour, surrounded by the powerful German Navy. Battleships bear their deafening guns down on the British defences, and the skies are set ablaze by anti-air artillery shells. The Luftwaffe attempts to cover the Kriegsmarine in their daring assault, but the Royal Air Force scrambles everything they have to push the invasion forces back.

This video shows a great execution of the Wagon Wheel tactic, also better known as Luftberry. While flying over a dangerous area swarming with German Bf.109s, the 71st flies in circles like vultures waiting for their dinner to climb up to them. We cover each other's rear, and if an enemy fighter wishes to engage us, he is forced to enter the Wheel of Death, where each pilot has a direct shot on his wingman's six. This manoeuver allows a disciplined flight to defend an area effectively and it gives elements enough flexibility to pick up their fights with an energy advantage, and the choice of engaging and/or disengaging at will.

Thanks to the leadership of Ratsy and Shello's remarkable sangfroid, we are able to shoot out of the sky many enemy fighters after a hard fight. The surviving pilots pancake at RAF Hawkinge for fuel and ammunition. Employing tactics like the Wagon Wheel requires good coordination, constant communication and training. As demonstrated, No. 71 Squadron pilots always rise up to the challenge.
