The One Nation, One Challan initiative, launched by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, seeks to create a system that can detect traffic violations through the CCTV network and generate e-challans with relevant penalty amounts, which are sent to the mobile number linked with the erring vehicle. It is to integrate data from apps like VAHAN and SARATHI. It also seeks to create virtual traffic courts that eliminate the presence of litigants in court.

Challan is an official notification issued by authorities under Motor Vehicle Act, 1988 notifying the violator (Motor vehicle driver) of violations of traffic rules and regulations defined under the Act attracting penalties.

The traffic e-challan can be paid either online or offline. Each state in India has a separate website dedicated to transport. An e-challan has to be paid within a period of 60 days from the day it is issued. Non-payment of the challan will lead to the challan being forwarded to the court.
