A través de la historia, la humanidad ha trabajado para superar los desafíos presentados por el mundo natural. La gente está siempre tratando de construir casas en tierras inestables, o de hacer aldeas enteras en las bases de los volcanes activos. Es casi como entre más grande el desafío, más queremos hacer que funcione.
En la Francia del siglo XVII, proteger el país de las poderosas flotas navales inglesas era primordial. Sin embargo, esto era difícil de hacer cuando sólo el Canal de la Mancha separó las dos tierras, que es un mero 20 millas de ancho en la brecha más corta.
