Can we become more creative by limiting our choices? Would we be more productive as musician, painters or writers, if we could focus more specifically by creating our own boundaries? And can we look at the limitations others have chosen as starting points for our own creativity?
I've been thinking about this for years. My father was an art education professor and he always contended that he really never taught anything, that it was only possible to create a circumstance within which a person can learn, can teach themselves.
So if we impose a specific limitation on the way we're creating, will it push us to see things in new and inspired ways? I think it will and I've been experimenting with this in my music and really, on the sort of minimalist bent of this channel.
The music used here is a piece I wrote many years ago, using a small and rudimentary sample library called Garritan (still available I believe) and a single plugin synth call Dimension. It's what I had at the time and though it might sound dated now, it forced me to find ways to get the sounds I was looking for with the tools at hand.
I am in no way supported (except musically perhaps) or sponsored by (in no way at all) the good people at TC Electronics. I simply enjoy the multi-tonal aspects of the toneprint pedals and that fact that I can get a digital effect pedal with analog dry through at their price points. I recommend them but no one pays me to do so (at the present time, hey, make me an offer, :).
