Over 27 mil. people in S. Korea expected to travel during Chuseok
코로나19로 추석 귀성길 많이 변해... 제주도는 여전히 인기 여행 목적지
The five-day holiday of Chuseok begins Wednesday and people in South Korea have already begun the mass exodus to their hometowns.
But with COVID-19 still a concern, much has changed.
Our Han Seong-woo looks into how the roads as well as air travel will look different over Chuseok this year.
Seoul Tollgate, where millions of cars branch off to different parts of the country at this time of year...wasn't as packed as people might have thought on the day before the Chuseok holiday begins.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport predicts almost 27-point-six million people will travel across the nation during the long holiday.
A 14 percent decrease from last year's figure of nearly 32 million.
But the trip from Seoul to Busan will still take roughly eight hours Wednesday morning, when traffic is to be at its worst.
As public transport usage is projected to drop due to concerns of COVID-19, more passenger cars will be out on the roads.
According to a Korea Transport Institute survey, just over 90 percent of respondents said they would be traveling in private vehicles.
In stark contrast, buses and trains combined accounted for less than eight percent.
Usually waived during the holidays, highway toll fees will remain valid from Wednesday until Friday.
And at rest stops, food can only be taken out as eating inside is prohibited.
As for air travel, Korea Airports Corporation estimates that seven-hundred-80 thousand people will visit 14 airports in South Korea, not counting Incheon International.
That's 25-percent fewer compared to last year, but popular destinations still await the crowds this Chuseok.
More than half of the flights departing from Gimpo Airport on Tuesday were headed to the southern resort island of Jeju.
"We're going to Jeju Island to spend some time away from home in a hotel. But we know we can't go too far."
The island's tourism association is expecting almost two-hundred-thousand tourists during Chuseok this year...not far off from the roughly two-hundred-30 thousand in 2019.
For safety reasons, all Jeju Air cabin crew members are required to wear masks and latex gloves.
And passengers are being spaced out to ensure that social distancing is maintained.
Upon arrival on Jeju, the local government is carrying out strict quarantine measures.
For example, anyone who has a temperature higher than 37-point-five degrees will be immediately escorted to a walk-through test center.
