Italy: Medieval town of San Giovanni in Galdo offers free accommodation to boost tourism

The medieval rural Italian town of San Giovanni in Galdo, located in the Molise region, is offering free holiday accommodation as part of a project dubbed "Regalati il Molise" (meaning "Give yourself Molise"), in a bid to boost the economy of the village that was hit by the coronavirus pandemic.

Beautiful old houses, narrow streets and iconic Italian cafes to enjoy an espresso could be seen being toured by some of the lucky visitors on Sunday, who got their hands on a free accommodation.

"We should have had tourists from North America this year, but the coronavirus condemned us. These tourists will come next year," explained the municipal councillor for tourism, Pietro Geremia.

"The idea for this year is to create an event that gives our country an international prominence to attract tourists who can bring value to our lands," he added.

According to reports, over 6,000 people applied for one of the 40 one-week stays in three of the town's houses between July and September 2020, with applications arriving from all over Europe and places as far as Ukraine.
