Article 13, now for some reason named Article 17, is an Internet censorship provision in the EU's copyright directive ostensibly meant to enforce copyright protection, but necessitates the implementation of strict content filters on any site with user submitted content such as YouTube, Facebook, Reddit, 4chan and more.

Although this law was only recently passed, it reflects a number of previously failed attempts at implementing such laws in the US. Most famously, SOPA and PIPA were extremely similar laws pushed in the early 2010s by Representative Lamar Smith and Senator Patricky Leahy. Although they initially had bipartisan support, they were fought off by a massive push from the online community.
