Animal Welfare Hero: K-9 Officer Puskas

K-9 Officer Puskas is a seven-year-old police dog serving the community of Santa Ana, California. Partnered with Officer Luis Galeana, Puskas has selflessly placed himself in harm’s way to resolve many hazardous situations and bring dangerous criminals to justice.

Recently, Puskas demonstrated his commitment to protecting the public during a police chase with a dangerous parolee-at-large wanted for assault with a deadly weapon against a police officer. The suspect violently carjacked a woman and began fleeing in her vehicle. He then attempted to flee on foot, running toward an office building filled with potential hostages and victims.

Officer Galeana released Puskas, who fearlessly chased down the felon. As Puskas closed the distance, he leaped through the air, tackling the suspect. In doing so, the collision knocked them both to the ground. Puskas struck his face on the concrete, breaking all his front teeth and causing a large gash in his gums. Despite the obvious pain, Puskas continued in his attempt to apprehend the suspect. Despite an intense struggle and injuries to his mouth, Puskas persevered and the suspect was taken into custody. After the incident, Puskas underwent a lengthy surgery to heal his injuries.

The American Red Cross is proud to honor K-9 Officer Puskas with the Animal Welfare Hero Award for his valiant defense of the community and for protecting and serving the residents of Santa Ana each and every day.
