Xhol Caravan Essen 1970 Germany Prog Rock, Jazz Rock, Krautrock

Xhol (Caravan) - Essen 1970 Germany Prog Rock, Jazz-Rock, Krautrock

Wooaah... Sound quality is a little bit thinner than the "Altena 1970" archival live set also released by Garden of Delights (yet still quite decent, mind you), but the music smokes like no other live Xhol I've heard.. Apparently, the band were unhappy about the conditions in which they performed at that huge festival in Essen (which resulted in tenor saxist Tim Belbe complaining in the microphone for one full minute at the beginning of the set) - which may have given said performance an added grit and edge ? Oh, and I do not hear any overlaps with other Xhol releases, either live or studio, this time around. It seems like they didn’t tap into their huge backlog of themes/melodies, and went for a totally fresh improvised set - to stunningly inspired results.
"Sparkling Geysers" is unbelievable.. as is most of the set. Mandatory.

And since Xhol were a bit of a magical band.. now, a bit of weird numerology, or synchronicity, or whatever you want to call it. I’ve just realised that founder member Tim Belbe left us in 2004, on the 18th of August, to be more accurate.. which also happens to be my birthday.

Edith (Piaf or Nylon, you choose) : well, they shortly quote that "Rock Me Baby" thing they already did on "Schaukel" (off Hau-RUK), with vocals courtesy of US-born, ex-GI drummer Skip.. but it's much, much shorter than the version on Hau-RUK, and is the only thing here that can be heard on another Xhol release. I will say it again (so all you Krautrock and Xhol fans out there buy the CD) : "Sparkling Geysers" is transcendental un-fragging-believable.

Edith (Wharton) : True, the sound quality is a little bit thin at the beginning of the set, but gets much better later on. Skip's drumming sounds especially powerful and three-dimensional here. In fact, this fantastic live document actually made me realise what a great drummer he was.
