A devoted catechist in 19th-century Vietnam, Daminh Huyên quietly lived out his faith by teaching the Gospel and encouraging others during times of great danger. Amidst Emperor Tự Đức’s harsh anti-Christian persecution, he was arrested for his religious activities. Offered freedom if he would step on a crucifix—a symbolic act of renouncing the faith—he instead held fast to Christ. For his refusal, he was executed in 1862.
One of the 117 Martyrs of Vietnam canonized by Pope John Paul II in 1988, Ðaminh Huyên represents the silent, steady witness of those who choose conviction over compromise.
