A submarine (or simply sub) is a watercraft capable of independent operation underwater. It differs from a submersible, which has more limited underwater capability. The term most commonly refers to a large, crewed vessel. It is also sometimes used historically or colloquially to refer to remotely operated vehicles and robots, as well as medium-sized or smaller vessels, such as the midget submarine and the wet sub. The noun submarine evolved as a shortened form of submarine boat; by naval tradition, submarines are usually referred to as "boats" rather than as "ships", regardless of their size (boat is usually reserved for seagoing vessels of relatively small size).

- How Submarines Work?

A submarine or a ship can float because the weight of water that it displaces is equal to the­ weight of the ship. This displacement of water creates an upward force called the buoyant force and acts opposite to gravity, which would pull the ship down. Unlike a ship, a submarine can control its buoyancy, thus allowing it to sink and surface at will.

- How Do Submarines Get Oxygen?

Oxygen is supplied either from pressurized tanks, an oxygen generator (which can form oxygen from the electrolysis of water) or some sort of "oxygen canister" that releases oxygen by a very hot chemical reaction. (You may remember these canisters because of their problems on the MIR space station -- see this page for details). Oxygen is either released continuously by a computerized system that senses the percentage of oxygen in the air, or it is released in batches periodically through the day.

- How Do Submarines "See" Underwater?

Submarines navigate using global positioning system while on the surface, however, this will not work while the vessel is submerged. Underwater, the crafts use inertial guidance systems that keep track of the ship’s motion from a fixed starting point using gyroscopes. These systems are very complex and difficult to use, and very accurate at the same time. They are accurate up to 150 hours at a time.
To locate targets, submarines use passive sonar. This works by emitting sound waves through water and allowing the sound waves to reflect off the target and return; by knowing the speed of sound in water and the time it took for the sound wave to travel back, submarines can calculate the distance to the target. This is the same technique that bats, dolphins, and whales use. These systems can also help recalibrate the inertial guidance systems.
