What Is Software Testing?

Luffy sat at his desk on his first day as a software tester.
His manager, a calm woman named Marina, placed a laptop in front of him.

"Today," she said, "you will find bugs."

Luffy nodded. He had studied hard. He knew the definition. Software testing is the process of evaluating a system to find defects. He had memorized it from a textbook.

But Marina shook her head slowly.

"That is part of it," she said. "But let me show you something."

She opened a simple web application. It was a form for ordering food. She typed a name, chose a meal, and clicked the button.

Nothing happened.

"Is that a bug?" she asked.

"Yes," Luffy said quickly.

"Maybe," Marina said. "Or maybe the internet is slow. Or maybe the server is busy. A tester does not just find bugs. A tester asks questions."

She refreshed the page and tried again. This time, an error message appeared: "Invalid phone number."

But she had not entered a phone number at all.

"Now that," she said, "is a bug."

Luffy leaned in. "Because the error message is wrong?"

"Because the system behaved in a way the user did not expect," Marina said. "Testing is about understanding expected behavior and comparing it to actual behavior. When they do not match, we investigate."

Luffy wrote that down. Expected vs. actual.

Marina continued. "Think of it like tasting food before a restaurant opens. The chef made the dish. The chef thinks it is good. But someone else must taste it. That person is not the chef. That person sees the dish with fresh eyes."

Luffy smiled. He liked that image.

"So testers are like food tasters?"

"In a way," Marina said. "We are the last check before the product reaches the user. If we miss something, the user finds it. And that is much worse."

She opened a new tab and showed him a news story. A bank's mobile app had crashed on payday. Thousands of people could not check their accounts. The company lost money. Customers were angry. The headline was embarrassing.

"Could testing have prevented that?" Luffy asked.

"Maybe not completely," Marina said honestly. "But good testing reduces risk. We cannot find every bug. But we can find the important ones. We can give the team information to make better decisions."

Luffy thought about that. Testing was not just clicking buttons. It was thinking. It was asking questions. It was understanding what the software was supposed to do and checking whether it actually did that.

"What do I test first?" he asked.

Marina smiled. "First, you learn the product. You use it like a real user. You explore. You get curious. Then we talk about test cases."

Luffy opened the food ordering app again. This time, he did not just click. He watched. He read every label. He thought about what a user might expect.

He was already thinking like a tester.
