About Vangelis Setup
As keyboardists can see , his master keyboard is an entirely custom order by Vangelis that is using for more than 20 years with custom MIDI system made by his personal sound engineers like YES AUDIO , under the orders of Vangelis adapted to his performing needs.
This custom setup is connected to various synths, racks that are mainly HQ samplers for emulating real acoustic instruments and orchestra ensembles.
Bear in mind that most sampler modules there are aged 20 years as you can hear in first woodwinds tests he does , so just imagine the result of using nowadays premium samples development where you would hardly distinguish the difference from a real Symphonic Orchestra.

Main reason of all those foot volume pedals is because all partial sampled instruments & orchestra ensembles are connected in OMNI midi state , they all play together so Vangelis is choosing in real time of what ensembles of orchestra will be heard using also keybed multi-splits and various velocity orchestra layers like timpani & cymbals.

Predefined patterns might have been used in 1-2 points where it was impossible to play all complex orchestra themes with only 2 hands but it does not cancel his actual real time playing.

This was the only way to play in real time a whole Symphonic Orchestra without the need of overdubs and sequencers , until WavesArt had offered a more simple solution for real time film-scoring using just a simple advanced Workstation like Korg Kronos 2 88 with a very sophisticated & complex programming of controllers and Karma scenes in order skilled Musicians to be able to do the job in real time.
