Hannah Williams, Leverhulme Early Career Research Fellow at the Queen Mary University of London presents her lecture "Portrayal and Commemoration: Medal Engravers at the French Academy of Painting and Sculpture." On the occasion of the exhibition The Pursuit of Immortality: Masterpieces from the Scher Collection of Portrait Medals, The Frick Collection held a symposium on Friday, September 8, 2017, in honor of Stephen K. Scher’s many contributions to the study of medals. This symposium builds on the work of Scher and others who have sought to re-center the medal in art-historical discourse, and aimed to bring this important class of object to the attention of the broader scholarly community and the public.
