My Choice - Salini & Bahar ic-Caghaq: Oscar & Josef Strauss

On the north west coast of Malta we find an area called "Bahar iċ-Ċagħaq" (Sea of Pebbles) and also the "Salini" (Salt Pans) area. We'll take a brief tour around these areas while enjoying music by Oscar Straus and Josef Strauss. Photos by Choy Hong (Jasmine) Grech.

First composition is Ein Walzertraum (A Waltz Dream) which is one of Oscar's most popular work.

Second selection is the Dorfschwalben aus Österreich (Village Swallows from Austria) by Josef Strauss. Plays the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Mro Carlos Kleiber.

Oscar Straus (1870--1954) was a Viennese composer of operettas and film scores and songs. He also wrote about 500 cabaret songs, chamber music, and orchestral and choral works. His original name was actually Strauss, but for professional purposes he deliberately omitted the final 's', since he wished not to be associated with the musical Strauss family of Vienna.

Josef Strauss (1827-1870) was born in Vienna, the son of Johann Strauss I and brother of Johann Strauss II and Eduard Strauss. His academic achievements at an early age do not point to his being a composer. His father thought he was best suited for a career in the Austrian Habsburg military, nevertheless, he studied music theory with Franz Dolleschal and learned to play the violin with Franz Anton. He was trained as an engineer, and worked for the city of Vienna as an engineer and designer.

Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq is a small Maltese village. The name Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq in Maltese can be translated to 'sea of pebbles' in English. It has a population of approximately 1250 people.

Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq is named after a long stretch of rocky coast characterised by a large number of pebbles and sharp rocks. The area was used as a camping site by British forces during the British colonial period of the islands.

Two century-old chapels are found in the area, one of which has been abandoned. A modern central parish church and Franciscan retreat house are also located in the village. Opposite Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq is a marine entertainment centre which also has a dolphin show. Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq also contains a small number of bars and restaurants and a boy scout camping site.

Here we find Malta's sound mirror - the ear (il-Widna), the only sound mirror built outside of the UK. These buildings were sound early warning radar systems built before World War II.

Salini is a village close to Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq and it is mostly known for its salt pans and the Salini Catacombs. The word salini means salt pans in Maltese.
