How to Make a HIDDEN DOOR using Pallet Wood | DIY Secret door

This is an easy way of making a hidden door, but it also has some limitations. For this build I have used pallet wood in order to create the secret door.

This will be a how to talkthrough of this project. Let’s jump right into it

Building the secret door:
- Where the hinges are(left side) you need to cut 45 degree angles on both the wood on the door and the "wallwood". This way the door will open about 90 degrees.. If you need more than that go 60/60 = 120.. or more..
- On the right side of the door make the wood overlap like you see in the thumbnail
- If the boards loosen you can use a screw to fasten it
- I took the doorknob off and used a magnet to make it stay closed. We open the door by grabbing the planks with the fingertips and pull it out. Serves as a kids safety device.

As some of you instantly will see I used pallets to make my walls, so I also let there be a overlapping of planks on the door to make the “transition” more natural. If u just cut it straight it would look like there was a door. Make sure to make the planks sticking out, no more than 15cm as they can become a nuisance.

You have to have a good solid backwall to fasten your boards.

Looking at how most newer doors are made, they are not very good for fastening objects to them, so we need to help it out. Either you could use screws to fasten the pallet wood – or you could make these “helping boards” for the fastening of small nails. I didn’t have a choice in the matter because my door was further inn than the wall, so I had to make the door level to my wall, using these boards, in order for this to work properly.

For the backcolor here I chose something we call “muted black” which is basically a black with some grey in it.

Hinges: This is where the limitation of using pallets will show. Because of the extra layer outside the door. Normally the door would swing open 180 degrees but in this case not. You have to cut your boards to an angle in order for the door to open. This works best if you, like me, have a door situation like this… about 90 degrees. But you can still make it work, you just have to go higher on the angles – but 180 degrees is not possible with my setup.. you could maybe go for 70-75 degrees and get away with it. It works like this… These two blocks are cut at a 45 degree angle – that gives me 90 degrees opening of the door – before the boards will stop the door from opening any further. The bigger the angle the bigger the opening of the door. Using a mittersaw for this is a great idea!

We now have covered overlapping planks, fastening of boards to the door and the challenging hinges. The last part is the operation of the door. I removed the normal door handle. At first I used two of these push magnets, but they were not strong enough to keep the door in. So I changed the setup with a strong magnet at the top of the door – that keeps the door in. But now we have a harder time opening the door. I believe the US market have better and stronger solutions for the push magnets – but in Norway they are hard to come by – so check it out and let me know if you find something good.
