1 in 20 children, aged between five and sixteen, suffer with serious behavioral issues ranging from refusing to eat, anti-social behavior, disruptive and violent tendencies. Mental health disorders in children can be hard to diagnose and for some parents not knowing whether their child suffers from a mental condition or just badly behaved can add more distress to an already difficult home life.

In this series, experts Dr Ravi Jayaram and Dr Dawn Harper, along with clinical psychologists, are going to help parent’s fast track the process to determine whether their children need medical help or if they are simply out of control.

10 Year old Thomas can talk at you for hours without interruption, takes everything very literally and, maybe because of this, he has no friends at school. On top of all of this he has crazy temper tantrums brought on by unexpected triggers. His parents suspect that Thomas might have autism. School is an incredibly aggravating experience for Thomas since he gets excluded by and doesn’t fit in with the other kids. This stress surrounding school causes him to take a lot of time off and he is falling behind in his studies and growing up because of it. Most people with autism find it impossible to live independently when they’re an adult but if Thomas can get a diagnosis at a young age like this, it could give him a chance to learn how other people think and, as a result, flourish with his own particular gifts in a society he’s not built for.

Jensen is an incredibly sweet and imaginative kid but when it comes to dinner time, this tiny tot can turn up a terrible fuss. Jensen’s mum, Jenna, thinks that it could be a food phobia caused by a horrible allergic reaction to peanut butter he had on his first birthday. Ever since this incident he almost refuses to eat completely, apart from his two bottles of milk before bed. He even throws his food around and occasionally comes up in hives on and around his face that his parents believe is also allergy related. Mum is worried that she might be doing something wrong but with such a strange case like this it’s hard to tell what the issue might be. Could it be a food phobia like she suspects, or could there be something less obvious at work?
