The UK has introduced tough new penalties for those who flout hotel quarantine rules, with jail terms of up to 10 years and fines of nearly $18,000.

into force next week, add to restrictions already in place, which include home isolation and the banning all overseas holidays and are aimed at preventing new coronavirus variants from spreading and threatening the UK's ambitious vaccination program.

All British and Irish nationals arriving in England from February 15 from any of 33 "red-list" high-risk countries in the previous 10 days will be required to undergo quarantine in one of 16 hotels and pay 1,750 pounds ($3,125) for the mandatory 10-day stay.
