The issue stems from a rubber diaphragm seal within the sensor, supplied by Kodiak Controls Inc., which degrades over time because an unauthorized chemical was used during its manufacturing. This degradation can lead to hydraulic fluid leaking into the brake pressure switch, causing an electrical short and posing a fire hazard.
What specific risk does this defect pose to vehicle owners?
The primary risk associated with this defect is an elevated fire hazard. The leaking brake fluid can seep into the electrical components of the brake pressure switch assembly, potentially causing a short in the switch and its associated fuse. In rare cases, this condition could activate the brake assist pump when the brakes are not applied, generating excessive heat and leading to an underhood fire. Consequently, GM is advising affected customers to park their vehicles outdoors and away from structures until repairs are completed.
